From Chendol to Cybersecurity: Kyle's Journey to Success

Meet Kyle, a 28-year-old Level 1 SOC Analyst at Evvolabs, whose unconventional career transition from selling chendol at Tekka market to cybersecurity exemplifies the transformative power of determination and the right education.

Career Shift: A Quest for Stability

Two years ago, Kyle found himself immersed in the vibrant chaos of Tekka market, selling the popular Southeast Asian dessert, chendol. The demanding schedule left him with little time for personal pursuits, prompting a desire for a more stable and flexible career.

Kyle's pivot towards cybersecurity was sparked by a conversation with a friend in the field. Intrigued by the industry's dynamic nature and the increasing necessity of technology, he decided to take the plunge, viewing it as a calculated gamble on a promising future.

The CFC Advantage: Bridging Gaps in Knowledge

Enrolling with the Centre for Cybersecurity (CFC) proved pivotal for Kyle, especially given his non-IT background. The programme's focus on fundamental concepts and hands-on labs allowed him to gradually grasp complex technicalities, bridging the gap between his hawker days and the sophisticated world of cybersecurity.

"CFC equips you with skills that are necessary inside the industry itself," Kyle notes. "It's very hands-on compared to other places where the test is multiple-choice questions. CFC gives you that time to practice and enables you to be capable in that sense to prepare you for what's to come when you go out to work."

Navigating Challenges: Rising Above the Learning Curve

For someone without a background in IT, the learning curve was steep. However, Kyle emphasizes the course's comprehensive approach, starting from the basics and gradually building up the syllabus. The supportive and knowledgeable instructors at CFC played a crucial role in Kyle's successful navigation through the challenges.

Advice for Aspiring Cybersecurity Professionals: Keep Learning

As Kyle reflects on his journey, he shares valuable advice for those looking to enter the fast-paced realm of cybersecurity. "It's important to keep up with the latest trends or attacks because it’s always evolving. If you don't keep up, you'll be left behind," he emphasizes. Kyle's ambition extends to progressing from a Level 1 SOC Analyst to exploring roles in threat hunting or malware analysis, emphasising the need for continuous learning in this dynamic field.

CFC: A Stepping Stone to Success

Asked if he would recommend CFC to others in his network, Kyle responds with a resounding "100%." Despite lacking certifications and a relevant IT or cybersecurity degree, Kyle secured a job post-CFC. The program not only provided technical skills but also assisted him in crafting a compelling resume, ultimately leading to his successful career transition.

In Kyle's journey, we witness the transformative power of education and determination, proving that with the right training, anyone can carve a successful path in the dynamic world of cybersecurity.
